Membership

Membership is extended at the sole discretion of the founder, on grounds he has never fully explained and is under no obligation to.

There is no committee, no vote, and no process worth describing. Some members were invited for what they have built. Some were invited because they are exceptional company. Most are both. Several have no idea why they were asked and have been too polite to raise it.

The Society grows slowly, on purpose, and an invitation carries real information: it means the founder looked at a room full of accomplished physicians and concluded that this particular one belonged in it.

What tends to matter

• Accomplishment. This is a room of people at the top of their fields, and it stays that way.
• Being good company. A great many excellent physicians would not fit here, and that is not a criticism of them.
• Discretion. Much of what is said is candid precisely because it does not travel.
• Showing up. The members who get the most out of this are the ones who come.
